Studies in laboratory animals suggest cloves help reduce fevers.

Clove and clove oil have been suggested for many other uses, based on tradition or on scientific theories. However, these uses have not been thoroughly studied in humans, and there is limited scientific evidence about safety or effectiveness. Some of these suggested uses are for conditions that are potentially very serious and even life-threatening. You should consult a health care provider before taking clove or clove oil for any unproven use.

Antioxidant
Antioxidants reduce oxidative stress, which participates in causing several different diseases like diabetes, atherosclerosis and cancer. The ACS reports that clove oil does demonstrate antioxidant activity in laboratory experiments. The antioxidant actions of cloves have not been confirmed in animal or human studies.
Painkiller
MedlinePlus states that clove oil, when applied topically to the gums, reduces pain from toothaches. A study in the July 2009 issue of the journal “Pain” reports that eugenol blocks pain reception in nerves and may be a useful local anesthetic for other pain conditions in addition to its widespread use in the dental clinic.
Anti-Bacterial
Diluted clove oil is often used as an antiseptic to clean minor wounds. A study in the November 2009 issue of “Phytomedicine” reports that eugenol synergizes with antibiotics to destroy bacteria. The ACS notes that clove oil also prevents the growth of fungi and molds in laboratory experiments. No clinical trials have evaluated the efficacy of clove oil for treating bacterial or other types of infections in humans.
Digestion
In Chinese medicine, clove oil is used medicinally to treat indigestion, nausea and vomiting. A study in a Brazilian journal notes that clove oil is effective in treating ulcers in rodents. MedlinePlus reports that there is insufficient evidence to determine whether clove oil is effective in treating digestion problems.
